When we
arrived in Perth, we were met at the train station by Digby Crisp, a
friend of mine from my school days at Melbourne Church of England Boys
Grammar School (MCEGS for obvious reasons). We spent the weekend
at Digby's place on the Murray River south of Perth near the Peel
Estuary. During the week, Mary and I traveled (in a car borrowed
from Digby) around the southwest of Western Australia, staying at
Bunbury, Augusta and finally Denmark before driving home on the Albany
Highway. We stopped at vineyards in the Margaret River area,
woodworking galleries in the forest areas and along the coast whenever
we could get to it which was most of the time! The weather was a
little rainy at first, but the last two days were sunny and we
thoroughly enjoyed this very different region. The forests are
magnificent and the wood made me drool! I have to get my hands on
some jarrah wood to work when I get home. I did manage to buy some burls
and some curly and lace woods for turning. We haven't figured out
how to send them yet, but it will really be fun to get those little bits
of Australia on the lathe and see what's inside of them.
