Utah - March 2008

07/16/08

In March, we flew to Las Vegas and rented a car to drive to St. George, Utah where Joseph now lives.  We visited with him for a few days and then drove up to Zion National Park where we stayed at bed and breakfast just outside the park.  Eleanor and Jake flew in later that night and we spent the next few days hiking in Zion.  It was a wonderful vacation and we enjoyed our offspring as always.  They are so much fun to be with.

Joseph and Mary Louise checking out some local real estate, a past time of Joseph's in St. George.  Can't say much about the trees there.... ...but the views of snow capped peaks is a pretty awesome sight to wake up to each morning this time of year.
Joseph took us out to Snow Canyon for a hike... ... and a little climbing.

The clan on a hike to the overlook below Angel's Landing...

...and at a lunch break.
Angel's Landing on the left and Zion Canyon in the center.  The kids climbed to the top of Angel's Landing as we watched and felt old.  The West Temple
We stopped at a switchback and snapped this.  The colors and snow just overwhelmed us.  Eleanor and Jake at Canyon Overlook.
My two girls!  Looking down into Zion Canyon from Canyon Overlook in Pine Creek Canyon.  The flat rock over Mary's head is the West Temple and the streaked rock just the right of Eleanor is imaginatively called Streaked Rock.  We hiked as far up Zion Canyon as one can walk without a wet suit this time of year.  You can see why this canyon can flood without warning, often with fatal results.
There was plenty of snow melt in the canyon, so we got to see a lot of waterfalls that would normally be dry.  The Three Patriarchs, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
I just couldn't get enough of the snow and red rock. Later in the day, I came upon a group of mule deer.  Note the beaver damage on the tree.
The kids.  What a crew!  That night we climbed up into the hills to watch the sunset and drink some grape.  We found a petrified tree on the way up!

Jake climbing down from Angel's Landing with Joseph in the background.  Mary Louise and I declined climbing this, realizing our limitations.  We can be seen as two, small, white chunks far in the distance near the first triangular shadow.  Gulp!  THIS is why parents get grey hair.
