After leaving Wanaka, we headed south toward Dunedin and then north along the coast a short distance before we turned west and headed up through the center of the South Island before we finally reached Christchurch and winged our way back to Tassie.

Dunedin is Gaelic for Edinburgh and the Scottish influence is strong.  The railway station there is one of the most beautiful in the world.  The tiles inside were made by Royal Dalton!   Just north of Dunedin at Moeraki are the famous boulders.  Here's Mary so you can see how huge these spheres are.
The boulders are mud balls that have crystallized around some central particle like a shell or stone.  As we drove north through the center, we caught the sunset on Mt. Cook.  That is Cook in the center with the sun shining on its west face.
We camped for a couple of days at Lake Tekapo in the center of the South Island.  Its blue waters against the barren, snow capped peaks really make this a jewel in the middle of the desert there.     Somehow we didn't expect to see this type of scenery in New Zealand, but it was still inspirational.  This is from the top of Mt. John where there is an observatory.
