The New Dam

03/27/08

We've had a lot of trouble with the dam this year.  Muskrats invaded last winter and we aren't sure, but we think we got rid of them.  We've had to dig into the dam and fill their dens and repair the tunnels and while we were at it, we decided to do something about the severe angle on the back side of the dam.  I couldn't even stand on it to cut the weeds.  We hadn't planned on such an extensive excavation, but the dozer operator hit a lot of rock and this was the best he could do.  I am very pleased.  I've planted it in fescue and with a little rain, we might get lucky enough to turn this green yet this fall.

This is looking west from the narrow area below the chic sale where you could just glimpse the pond before.  Looking northwest across the rock bench...
The rock now sits level and is surrounded by a triaxle load of sand... Looking down on the pond from the cleared area above.  This area was robbed of soil to build the original dam back in the 80's and it looked horrible.

The now flat area above the pond should be a great place for the scouts to camp.  It is the only flat area we have!

Looking south from the flat area towards the woods.  We ran a trail down to my permanent hunting stand and the deer are already using the new trail!
