The farm we call
Possum Trot isn't actually a farm or at least it hasn't been farmed for
more than 90 years that we know of. It is hard to imagine it was
ever farmed for a living. My great, great grandfather purchased
the land over 100 years ago and named it Possum Trot. My
grandfather built the cabin there and did some clearing, planted some
fruit trees, ran goats and hogs in the woods and used the place as a
retreat from the hustle of the real world which is how we use it today
(no goats or hogs, though). He built the cabin and surrounding
buildings (none of which is still standing save the chic sale which now
sports new siding and a steel roof) using labor that he paid for with
food during the depression in the late twenty's and early thirty's of
the last century. By 1975, the cabin had rotted beyond the point
of redemption and we began to tear it down. Since about 1987, we
have been rebuilding and the cabin is now quite livable with double pane
windows, screens, steel doors, insulation, and recently a kitchen and bathroom.
We have even installed most of a solar electricity system. Here are some photos
to give you an idea of how we spend our time.
