We stopped along the coast to take a shot of this river.
The waters carry a lot of glacial flour or glacial milk as we
would say. |
Our campervan was more than adequate and we quickly adjusted to
life in its compact spaces. Here's my bride fixing dinner.
I know it's a chauvinistic shot, but it was a better shot than
one of me doing the dishes. |

Here's the happy couple at Franz Joseph glacier.... |
We drove
over Haast Pass in sunshine.... |
 |
 |
|
And then down into Wanaka which sits at the base of the
mountains in between two lakes. |
While we
were in Wanaka, we drove north toward Mt. Aspiring National
Park..... |
 |
 |
|
The scenery along the river north of Wanaka...This area was used
as part of the scenery south of Rivendell in Lord of the Rings. |
We crossed
over the Matukituki River on a footbridge on our tramp toward
Mt. Aspiring. |
 |
 |
|
We flew from Wanaka to Milford as this was the only sunny day
forecast for the week. We hit it about right, don't you
think? |
Mt.
Aspiring - up close and personal..... |
 |

|
Another Rings scene, this time Isengarde... |
The Clutha River near Wanaka.... |
 |
 |
|
It had rained a lot the day before we were at Milford and there
were waterfalls everywhere. |
The sound
area is full of classic "U" shaped, glacier cut valleys, snow
capped peaks and waterfalls.

What can
you say about Milford Sound? |
It is
simply stunning. This is one of two permanent waterfalls
in the sound, actually a fjord, misnamed a long time ago.

 |
 |
|
The other permanent waterfall... |
Is that a
holiday smile or what! |
