Freycinet National Park with the Kids

03/27/08

Freycinet  was a place we had talked about sufficiently that we had to take the kids there.  In addition, it has one of the world's most outstanding beaches.  We just couldn't not go.  It was our last outing of their visit and we were all worn out from all the things we squeezed into our trip, but we really enjoyed our time on the east coast.

Joseph, Mary and Eleanor at a lookout above Wineglass Bay.  Can you believe the color of the water?

Jake and Eleanor at our spot on the beach at Wineglass Bay.  Note the absence of other bathers.  This is not trick photography.  Even in peak season, it was not crowded.

Along the path over the saddle to Wineglass Bay we saw pink hyacinth orchids in bloom!

The banksia trees were blooming everywhere along the paths.

We stayed at Kabuki by the Sea, an idyllic spot if there ever was one.  We thoroughly enjoyed our time there even though it was short and vowed to go back.

The view from the cliffs in front of Kabuki by the Sea looked over Oyster Bay to Freycinet, Schouten Island and out to the Tasman Sea.

A bush fire raged the entire time we were at Freycinet.  We had to drive through the dense smoke several times and it played havoc with our allergies!  By the third or fourth day, it was under control and they were just letting it back burn.

Jake and Colin, a friend from Hobart, dove up a bag full of abalone for us and Colin donated his share to us for our dinner that night!

Here are the abalone.  There were seven of them and bringing them up involved diving to the bottom, spreading the kelp to find a crack in the rocks, locating a shell that was legal and prying it off of the rock before it dug in tight.  All this had to be accomplished without loosing the spot during surfacing for air!
