Summer

01/04/09

This summer has flown by.  With a huge garden, lots of family reunions, USA Dance Nationals and just keeping up with the yard and house, it's been wild!  We have been busy in the garden, especially with quarts of raspberries, bushels of corn and now squash (pumpkins for our Aussie friends), cantaloupe and tomatoes.

We are hard at it on the dance floor.  At this year's nationals, we took a first in the Pre-Championship and third in the nation in the Championship round!  In late August, we took a trip with my brother, Bob and his wife, Yuki.  This is the longest covered bridge in Ohio.
Here's yours truly and my bride at the Bridge of Dreams.  It is for non-motorized traffic only and there was no explanation of the dreams.  Speaking of non-motorized traffic, this is Alvin and Allen up front taking us on a tour of the Yoder farm.  Allen is a retired harness (sulky) racer and can go at a pretty good clip!  Even the Amish need to have a little fun sometimes!
It could be 1830 or... it could be today. These folks were baling hay and we (I have to credit my brother, actually) had to snap this shot.  We hoped they didn't mind.
My orchids are responding to my loving attention and are starting to bloom.  I probably dote on them a bit much, but flashes like this one from a Brassia make it a lot of fun.  Our Epiphyllum oxypetalum bloomed three times this summer!  Commonly called night blooming cereus, it puts out the most wonderful scent.  Our neighbors could smell it at their house! This bloom was almost ten inches in diameter and only lasted one night.  The flowers are pollinated by the hummingbird moth, a hawk moth.
